Shinichi Maruyama uses high-speed photography to capture beautiful forms that last only a micro-second.
“When Jackson Pollock invented his iconic “drip painting” method, the messes he made could at least be claimed as part of the finished product. Queens-based sculptor Shinichi Maruyama doesn’t have it that easy. His delicate “water sculptures” only last for a...

West Bank Story
Just saw this musical on IFC with my mom. You need to watch it immediately - it’s short (25 mins or so) and hilarious. TRUST ME. And also trust the Academy Awards - it won the Oscar in the ‘Best Live Action Short Film’ category
It also finally brings to light something I’ve been saying for years; if you want peace in the Middle East, make hummus.

New Music for Voice and Piano!
So I just finished a new piece of music, commissioned by my friend Shari. Now that I’m done and have had a second to think about it, this will most likely be part of a set based on the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon), or שיר השירים, Shir ha-Shirim in Hebrew. This particular verse is one of the more famous sections of this controversial Biblical text. Some say it’s a metaphor...

Did you know that Bill Joel writes classical...
I did not.
It’s pretty good, too! Apparently he put out an entire album back in 2001. Definitely emulates the romantic music he was listening to (Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Schubert…) but the melodies are too rich and lovely to simply discredit as copycats. What a great way to grow as a musician as he gets older….
Here’s a sample.

Me: My apologies. I have mixed up your records with those of one, Orbison Flanders. Good luck with your finals at the Clown College [the college for clowns].
Allie: Are you in Chicago in real life?
Me: Nah I wish WTF

Me: FUCKING CRAY-Z
Allie: also, "with arms wide open"

How an 11-Year Old Girl Convinced Lincoln to Grow... →
theatlantic:
In what has to go down as one of the all-time great moments of political image consulting, an 11-year old girl suggested to a fresh-faced Abe Lincoln that he grow a beard. And then he did. The website Letters of Note even has copies of the girl’s letter and Lincoln’s response. Beyond being the cutest historical footnote of all time, Ms. Grace Bedell, had some solid reasoning...
